Howdy!
^^ At the Palm Springs Follies in a '30s hostess gown ^^
Gee, sorry I'm no good at keeping up this blog thing.
Maybe y'all thought I fell into the Salton Sea! (Almost did, metaphorically speaking;
did you know you can buy land parcels out there for under $1,000? Oooh, I was tempted!) I've
been without a home internet connection for quite some time, and kind of bouncing around. I
just finished up a strange stint living in a motel while looking for a place to live after fleeing from the Housemates from Hell, but now at long last I have a groovy li'l sublet and am starting to feel a bit
more relaxed. So hopefully it won't be so cobwebby up in here
anymore! I have so many fun Californian adventures to share.
Shields Date Gardens... heavenly for eyes & stomach alike!!
Now here are some fabulous DATE QUEENS from date festivals past!! The Riverside County Fairgrounds itself, where all this is still held, is the most magnificent midcentury approximation of Middle Eastern exotica. Also, I believe the day's events include camel racing and some sort of ostrich rodeo; totally wacko!!
((Click through for sources.))
Did you know that yours truly has also ridden a camel? Well I have. Her name was Cleopatra and she had the most spectacular eyelashes.
See ya soon! ♥

SO happy to see a blog post from you Dakota! Truly one of my favorite blogs <3
ReplyDeleteI recently had to move from California and this post is making me nostalgic - I love your outfit for the gardens! ^^
I'm happy to see another post from you too! That 30s hostess gown is a dream! And you keep teasing me with those date shakes, ergh.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you finally have a place to yourself, I know what it can be like to have to live with horrible roommates! (And I hope I have your correct address?)
Can't wait to see more from your California stay!
Welcome back! You look as glamorous as ever, haha! That hostess dress is a dream, and I want to a) visit that soda shop and b) ride a camel. Maybe ride a camel to a soda shop, who knows. A girl can dream. Can't wait to see more of your adventures!
ReplyDeleteI used to go to Date Festival all the time when I was a kid but then we moved and missed it for often than not. It was lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteHehehe! I love your wacko Date Queens, they are wonderful. I rode a Camel once in India, she was beautifuly and heavily decorated ( so much so that I actually felt very sorry for her) and I literally laughed (and screamed) the whole time... so much fun.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you have found yourself a lovely new home and it's so nice to see more of what you have been up to. The Date gardens look amazing! Oh and Hello beautiful you in your hostess gown, so pretty. xxx
A very warm howdy to you as well, dear gal! It's splendid to see you and to hear more about your exciting adventures! Camel riding, now that's not something one sees a vintage blogger doing every day. Was it fun? It looks fun (once you're up), and is something I'd definitely try, too.

Oooh, I would love to go to the date festival! How wonderfully kitsch (and, conveniently, wonderfully delicious). This reminded me of a post on a blog which my friend pointed out to me:

This looks like so much fun! I LOVE Palm Springs, there is something magic about the desert. My boyfriend & I have been planning to go to the Date festival, then maybe I too can ride a camel....yipee!!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Tina
Aww Kailey, you made my day!! California quickly became one of my favorite places I've ever visited; I'm sorry you had to move :(
ReplyDeleteRachel, I wish I could mail you a date shake!! (Maybe I'll put one in a ziplock baggy for you, yum yum.)
Thank Lisa!! Riding a camel TO the Shields soda fountain... now this is my dream, too, especially if I could wear one of those spangled Date Queen outfits.
Mariela, Kelly-Marie, Jessica, and vintageloving gal, thank you so much!! It's great to be back to to blogging :)
Thanks so much for that awesome link, Miss Marie-- what a riot! I love the lobster girls best. Am getting some serious Halloween inspiration...
Wowzers you look amazing, particularly love the hostess gown. Amazing looking diner and the camel ride what fun. I went on in Tunisia for about 5 minutes it was scary but fun! xxx
ReplyDeleteI totally want to ride a camel! (well, if they're up to it, that is) Look at those Date Queens! Fabulous! Wow, I hate that you had to flee and move into a motel. Those roommates MUST have been horrible. On to happy things!
ReplyDeleteawesome!!!!:)
ReplyDeleteShields is one of my favorite places in the desert! The fact that they have a whole turnstile display full of vintage postcards is just icing on the sweet, sweet date cake. Did you sample the blondie date? It's my favorite. Did you watch the film in the cool little theater? What can I say, I am a total dork for the desert and for dates! I hope you had a wonderful time out here!
ReplyDeleteYes!! The Blondies WERE delicious, and a Shields exclusive as I learned in the very informative "Sex Life of the Date" film!! That theatre was amazing, with the wrought iron seats and everything... what a fantastic gem of a place.
DeleteGreat to see a post from you! Glad you've found somewhere nice to live. Love your photos, as usual :D

If I ever make it to America I think I'm just going to use your blog as my tour guide Dakota, I love seeing the places you visit, and how beautifully turned out you always are while you're about it. xx
ReplyDeleteSorry you had to move but glad you had fun in CA!
ReplyDeleteOnce again, you are just the cutest! I hope you settle into your new place okay and new housemates are not from hell! I know what that is like! Take care kitten! Zoë xx
