back to school

Yeah, more collegiate looks. It may be a style more commonly associated with Fall, but as my spring semester gets under way, it's still how I'm dressing every day. These pictures come from the Bard College Archives, and were taken in the '40s and '50s.

(Oh, I've the same ol' lament... why, oh why, don't college boys dress like this anymore?!)

^^That sweet pup is her Seeing Eye Dog.

Bard has a reputation for appealing to more artistic types, and that's reflected in the way these young women are dressed. Sometimes all those gorgeous Life pictures can be mildly discouraging, as many of those girls seem to be fair, willowy, natural beauties. I like how these gals seem a little more relaxed... not so immaculate, with glasses galore and nary a saddle shoe in sight. Notice all the jeans and sneakers; my oh my!

You can see more of the archives  here. They go back to the 19th century and up 'til the 1980s, and are really worth a look if student (and faculty!) fashions interest you.

  1. These are really neat! The girl in the 4th pic really stands out to me for some reason. Thanks!

  4. BEST. Oh god, those boys do look sharp. And I would be all over Bard if it wasn't so far north (I actually was very close to applying there o.o)

  5. Sigh. Everyone looks so lovely and put together in these photos. I really wish we had style like that these days....now college campuses are full of schlepping students in flannel pajama pants. Oy! (that sounds like I'm some old lady, it was like that when I was in college not so very long ago at any rate!)

  7. These people look so classy and nice. I often wore sweatpants and really, really old sneakers to class when I was in college :/

  8. Look at those girls painting in their heels! That isn't done anymore either (sadly), except by maybe yours truly.

    1. Hmm, I'd think my feet would get sore, and there's a good chance those heels would end up paint-splattered before long, ha! But if you two can pull it off, more power to you :)

  9. What a refreshing bunch of photographs, such a contrast to my own college experience. When (and why) people stopped getting dressed for class is beyond me.

  10. I've always been a sucker for more relaxed, everyday, real life vintage photographs. While I understand why people are drawn to the idealized high fashion or "pin-up" fantasy aesthetics of the time, these views of everyday situations combine beauty with plausibility.

Thank you for picking out and presenting these gems.

    1. Couldn't agree more :) I love to daydream about Hollywood fashions, but these sweet, simple looks are actually within reach.

  11. Glad you liked these!! I agree, I wish more people at my school dressed this way :( I'm virtually the only girl who dresses up every day on my casual-obsessed campus.

  12. This is just so wicked cool! I love this kind of stuff. One year, for my birthday, a really great friend had gone out and found a yearbook from the 50s just because they knew how much I loved seeing photos just like these. I'm so glad you shared this!

  14. I love vintage photographs of everyday life too, and your blog is a real treasure trove! That one photo of the guy playing piano, I'm a college guy who dresses exactly like that, and I too wonder why it's so overlooked by today's college crowd.
