the willard asylum suitcases

1. Have a look at this wonderful photography series I just stumbled upon. These suitcases were found in the attic of an abandoned insane asylum in upstate New York; the contents are now being recorded in this stunning series of pictures. It's fascinating to see what got left behind, and the context makes it especially sad and a little spooky. You may read more about the project here.

2. This weekend it snowed (!!!) and we were plunged into the throes of midwinter :/  I am hoping the sun melts it all away sharpish, as it's much too early!! Look at this surreal picture of my yard:

Well, I hope you had a splendid hallowe'en!
(I didn't really celebrate it this year, as the combination of a blizzard-induced power outage and impending midterm exams left me little time for fun, haha)

  4. This find of amazing photos from such an erie building are right up your alley Dakota! Wouldn't it be spooky fun to find such incredible treasures? I know from previous posts you have some little secret abandoned houses you've photographed, which I love! Back to the pics, I have a little story running through my head of some well-to-do, stylish woman being sent for a "rest cure" and having all her glamourous things taken off her at the front desk and forced to wear green or white patient clothes. So sad. The brush set is perfection and I love the shoes and sealing wax. And the clothes look very interesting:). xo

  12. I'm really glad you all appreciated those photos!! They're a bit depressing, but oh-so-fascinating to wonder about. Ooh, and I'm really really glad they ended up in responsible hands, but what I wouldn't give to stumble upon something like that someday!

  13. The suitcase photos just popped up on my facebook newsfeed too, so glad to see others find this sort of thing so fascinating. My imagination goes wild with these images- if one has need of an asylum, what state of mind are they in while packing? what made them choose these items?..... Crispin's blog on this project is fascinating as well- it's interesting to read his thoughts on each case.

I couldn't put my finger on what's so odd about your photograph but then it dawned on me- it's the leaves on the bush you are standing in front of. Green leaves and snow just don't mix (and often spell trouble and heavy branches). Any way, you look wonderful, as usual! I hope the snow melts for you soon.

  14. This is so strange and fascinating. I cant help but wonder about the people who owned them, they brought such fancy things with them...did they know where they were going? Did they ever get out? *shivers*
