south of the border

 senorita

Well hello, strangers! I've just returned from beautiful Old Mexico, where the desert is a-blooming and the Coca-Cola comes in a glass bottle. I stayed in a pretty little town south of Ensenada.

  1. Looks like a great trip! That last shot gives me true wanderlust. Is that a real zebra? A horse painted to look like a zebra? What is going on there? Color me intrigued.

    1. That would be Tommy the "Tijuana zebra", or a donkey in greasepaint ;)

  8. Oh these pictures are beautiful!!! I have never been to Mexico but I have been traveling to the southern part of Cali just on the United States side of the border for most of my life since I have family there. It is a beautiful area! The landscape is amazing and the people are so welcoming! It looks like you had a fun time, and I can't wait to see and hear more about your trip!

    Take care and adios!

    1. Haha, no, that is Tommy the "Tijuana zebra"... it's a sort of tourist attraction, painted donkeys you can have your picture taken with! Totally hokey, but unbelievably adorable. Tommy's owner even takes that little guy on the bus with him; this donkey was a real public figure ;)

  12. What a lovely looking trip! You look picture perfect, like you stepped straight out of a 1950s western. Hope you had a wonderful time! (and yay for Mexican Coke in the glass bottles!)

  15. I love these photos! and my goodness!, you look darlin' as a lil senorita. We seem to be on the same style wavelength again. I hope you had a nice time in Mexico; it sure looks like you did. Though I have some fond memories of Mexico, I haven't been over the border in a few years on account of the not so fond memories. The corruption and poverty weigh heavy on my heart, but your photos are encouraging me to give Mexico another try. What's the story on your jacket? I love it. It reminds me of a Nudie.

    1. Oh Crystal, I know what you mean... for every beautiful vista and charming hacienda, there's always the stark reality of poverty; we had to drive by rows of maquiadoras on our way into the nearest city. I also did some volunteer work with local fostered street dogs; very sad to see all the homeless pups :(

Ah, but my jacket is a 1940s embroidered deal, originally from Mexico... but snagged on American eBay by my mother as a gift :)

  27. OMG you visited my state!!!
Baja California it´s beautiful. Maybe not the most mexican of Mexico´s towns, but surely the only one who can show you all Mexico in only one place.
You know, there´s a song that say :Tijuana is the happiest place on earth.

    Hope you enjoyed your visit!

  28. Dakota,

It's Dawn - from Baja. What beautiful photos! Is the photo of you and Coco the one I took on that great camera of yours? I was so worried it wouldn't be in focus. Thanks so much for being Coco's special friend when you were here visiting. I know she enjoyed it more than you did.

I have a favor to ask. Would it be possible to use some of your photos on our animal rescue site? Especially that one of you and Coco - it could be her 'after' pic. And the one of you and the dogs - really cool.

OK, let us know. And, it goes without saying, you're welcome here anytime with a key to the tack room and an open gate for riding.

    Take care,

    Dawn and Tina Jo
