cape cod album, vol. I

A little sampling of my outfits & adventures on my seaside holiday... Part One of Three.

✯ This little late '30s/early '40s shift dress and bolero set is awfully sweet, don't you think? I wore it on a guerilla photo shoot at this private beach in the very wealthy & exclusive town of Osterville, shh!

✯ I'm back in my '40s nautical toile frock! This is one of my all time favorite dresses; it's perfect in every way. It looked lovely against the gray skies and waters down by the canal here in Sandwich. Sandwich is the oldest town on the Cape, and is a very history-oriented town... which is lucky for me, 'cause that's where my family hails from! Indeed, it was at my aunt and uncle's house there that I stayed.

✯ My 1930s beach pyjamas proved themselves to be my most amusing and endearing item of clothing, though. The legs are so wide, I can fit all of myself into one leg, hehe. But they sure are cool in the muggy weather, and they're so much fun to wear. Note the swan in the second picture! I tried to get a closer picture, but it hissed at me, and swans, while beautiful, terrify me.

Well, that's it for now, folks. Hope all's well; see you soon!

  1. You look so nice, that dress is cute :) How do you find these treasures! Do you have some magical skill? I usually spot only some funny 70's-80's dresses when shoppin in vintage stores.. :D

  2. love your film photos, Dakota! What a beautiful sea side town, in which you fit in just right. I am madly in love with your 30s pajama jumpsuit. Where in the world did you find them? oh yes, I also love the wildflowers.

  3. Thank you, dolls!!
To answer both questions... eBay! eBay's where it's at, you just have to be patient & sift through all the vague, badly labeled listings. I bought a dirt cheap lot of 7 poorly photographed and described "1950s" dresses on a hunch.... yup, they were all amazing 1920s and 1930s cotton day pieces. These pyjamas were in the lot; averaged out, they cost me about $9.50! Score of the century!!!!

  7. I love all these looks! The beach pyjamas look adorable and comfy. I haven't been to Cape Cod (or most of the east coast) but it looks lovely!
As for ebay, I just spend an hour going though tons of listings. You really do have to shift to get to the good stuff, but when you find it, it's worth it!

  20. Thank you for the kind words!!

Mary, they are the Remix "Brisas" (discontinued now, unfortunately, but Remix has lots of similar styles). Originally I was unsure about the color, but they were 75% off so I had to snap them up. I love the mustard color now!!

  22. I love the charm of the New England coast. I'm not sure that a tropical seaside holiday would fully satisfy me. Give me the rocky beaches and the cold Atlantic :)

All three of these outfits are darling, but the beach pyjamas especially so.

  23. What a lovely setting for all your gorgeous vintage outfits, I especially like the scalloped edges on your bolero. I'd never heard of beach pajamas before this post, did ladies wear them over their swimsuits?

  24. Your photos are stunning! They look like they're right out of the past :)

  25. So so pretty! I just love seeing these shots of New England... I have a lot of family that comes from that neck of the woods (though further up the coast--Maine), and have only been there a couple times in my life. We've talked about eventually taking a little tour-vacation of New England one summer and checking out all the spots we've wanted to go to, and seeing these photos just makes me wish I could hope in the car and do that right now! :)

I think the beach pajamas are my favorite (I've been wanting to make some for myself since my friend Lauren at Wearing History released a pattern for that style!)--they look so cool and comfortable. :) Love your yellow shoes too!!
