lilac time

It's Lilac Season, arguably the most splendid time to be in Vermont.
There are many lilac trees on our property, and all up and down our road. When they all open up, the air is actually perfumed of lilac! The view is quite something, as well.

In celebration of this event, I chose to wear my little 1920s gingham day dress, which has a most appropriate color scheme. It's in marvelous shape for its age, and I just adore it. It's usually the humble cotton day dresses that tug the most at my heartstrings; evening wear is fine and dandy, but give me a sturdy little house dress any day. They seem to have the most stories to tell; can't you just picture this one on some curly-headed little gal in her 1923 class portrait or something?

Of course I brought some inside...

  1. What a beautiful dress! It's perfect against the lilacs. I'm always amazed and awed when I find a dress that's 90-100 years old and still in wearable condition. Of course, these sturdy little cotton dresses hold up the best! I guess they have the most stories to tell precisely because they're such little troopers.

  3. SIGH...I am in full on Lilac mode as well. MY FAVOURITE flowers. I'm even thinking of trying a recipe for lilac jelly I got last year. That 20s dress is just GORGEOUS. I'm a huge fan of lilac purple worn by dark haired fair haired lasses. SIGH!

  6. Awww I miss lilacs! I'm sure by now my mother has brought a bunch inside just like you have- their scent is incredible. It seems, unfortunately, that they don't tolerate the heat here.
What a perfect dress for this time of year, the color is spot on lilac.
You can wear any era and any color- it all looks good.

  7. I do agree that it's the simple house frocks that make me melt. I think of some sweet lassie feeding the chooks, hanging out the clothes, swinging on the porch sipping lemonade. To me, they have just as much of the wow factor as evening dresses. These frocks have a story to tell. As for the lilacs, well I clearly need to visit Vermont in springtime to find out more about these beautiful blooms! xo

  9. My grandmother's favorite flowers were lilacs so they always remind me of her. Sadly there are no blooming lilacs near me in Chicago but I'm glad to see your photos! I love that your little frock matches your surroundings, it's also amazing that you're able to wear a 80 year old dress!

  10. This is such a gorgeous post! And how lame is this: I read this post this morning and I realized I had no clue as to what a lilac smelled like...so on the way to work I stopped in a local flower shop and asked to smell one! And now I'm jealous of you. And how you get to smell them all the time.

  15. Thank you, darlins!

House dresses and lilacs seem to be a love we all have in common, quel surprise! ;-)

Anna and Pull Your Socks Up, I couldn't agree more. The house dresses are the ones people lived in, wore day in and day out-- they have such personality!

    Baroness, lilac jelly??? Sounds interesting!

Victoria and Michal, I'm with ya on the gingham love :D

And for all of you who are currently lilac-less, I truly am sorry, they smell so magnificent, hehe.
