pretty polly

tewksbury 3

(outfit: Edwardian jacket; antique slip; Dr Marten boots)

Hello all! This little Edwardian silk jacket is my newest obsession; it's so pretty (very fragile, though...I have to wear it with care). These are some more pictures from my weekend trip home; just hangin' around at yet another abandoned house (this one is just down the street). Me, creepy? No!

It’s actually quite funny: the weather that day was in the 70s and all the little songbirds were singing. I swear the sky was blue earlier, too. I was having so much spring-ish fun taking these pictures at our neighborhood abandoned farm! Well, I then got home and uploaded my pictures only to see that the early April landscape had translated as a stark, gothic, even bleak world on film. I still like the pictures, they just make it seem more like late Autumn than the springtime. My black-and-white Victorian ensemble isn't exactly lightening the mood either; oh well. I assure you I haven't gone goth, and the bright colors will return shortly!

(Some candid facial expressions caught here, haha; I was watching my dog!)

Post title comes from this 1930s all-girl string band's ultra creepy version of the haunting folk murder ballad of Pretty Polly!

I would also like to thank you all for the tremendously kind comments on my "abandoned cottage" post; you're all such dolls! Welcome new followers, too! I get that disbelieving "they like me, they really like me!" feeling every time; thanks so much everyone! ♥

  4. You're adorable! I love your style and your photographs. I wear a lot of Edwardian antiques myself and knowing there are others out there who have an obsession with 100 year old clothes makes me feel less like a weirdo! Or at least, it makes me glad that I'm such delightful company. I think you might just be my favourite blogger :)

Frankly My Dear-- I did a little post showing off the shoes right here: http://dakota-rodeo.blogspot.com/2011/02/true-blue.html

Anna-- You're so sweet, thanks so much!! You don't sound the least bit weird to me : )

Baroness and iLiveinmyLab, thanks for confirming I've not gone too far into Elvira territory, haha.

Victoria-- So funny you said that, my obsession with girly Edwardian clothes all began with Anne of Green Gables!

  10. my oh my, I wish New Zealand had a longer history/was a bigger country so it had more vintage bits and pieces. My savings are doing well but when I get home I'm going to relish spending all my hard earned cash on vintage finds.

  11. oh wow - your amazing finds constantly make me jealous. You look lovely as always :) Now tell me - why are there so many abandoned houses? I know of maybe 1 or 2 in Sydney... houses are so valuable, you'd be crazy to leave one to rot!

  12. Rebeccak: I live in a rural area where farming used to be the big thing, but is a dying way of life now as kids move out of state and the costs of operating a farm rise. Most of the abandoned homes around here were farms left vacant during the Depression or later. It's pretty sad, but cool at the same time. I'd rather have gorgeous vacant farmhouses than stripmalls and suburbs!

  13. I'm always amazed at the Victorian/Edwardian items you uncover, I would have never guessed your dress was a slip either! Fun setting as well, I don't think it looks too gloomy.
